The attic in Rebello-Almeida House's Rebello section is filled with various utensils, pots and barrels - the huge pot and barrel especially were perfect for making wine at home - that rarely see the light of the day.

A Valkar home that housed the Rebello family in Small Giriz, the Late Gregory Rebello and his wife Celina continued to live in it after his brothers married and moved out.

The Valkar East Indians in Vasai mostly pursued carpentry or held positions in offices in Bombay. Gregory too would travel to 'town' for his job at electrical company, Crompton Greaves.

Explore this and more old East Indian houses in Giriz, Vasai by looking up the hashtag #EIMCOHGPCalendar on Instagram.

Some of you were curious about the flooring in the nearly 200 year old Rebello-Almeida House, and to be honest, so are we.

Unfortunately, we weren't able to find out enough information about this Valkar East Indian house in Small Giriz, Vasai, and even less so about the various architectural details that went into it.

If there are any readers knowledgable about the local architecture found in the Konkan strip, do chime in with your thoughts. {We explored old EI houses in a parish in Bassein/Vasai and highlighted them in our 2018 calendar on the same subject. Rebello-Almeida House was the house of the month for February. Look up the #EIMCOHGPCalendar hashtag on Instagram to view more of these houses.} #eastindian #architecture #heritage #vasai #mumbai #thane #raigad #maharashtra #india #woodenhouse #villagelife #1800s #1820s #indianhome #oldhouse #EIMCFeb19 #vadval #rebello #almeida #traditionalarchitecture #valkar #antique #flooring #vintage #tiles #Bombay #Bassein
When we embarked upon the #EIMCLugraLegends series last year, we knew for certain that it would result in capturing some memorable stories.

The people behind these stories are equally important as they continue to play a vital role in bringing this 10-yard traditional saree of the East Indians closer to the community and the wider world.

We will continue to explore this series and look forward to adding more individuals - especially the ones who are also putting a modern twist to the garment - in the coming months.

Do have a look at the posts under the hashtag mentioned above on Instagram and if you can think of anyone who fits the bill, shoot us a quick message!

In Vasai, the Valkar East Indians number considerably less than their Kupari and Vadval counterparts, and are perhaps on par with the number of Koli EIs.

A large section made their home in Giriz - one of the parishes located to the North of Vasai. But even in Giriz, one will come across Valkar homes in Big Giriz, Small Giriz and New Giriz, where the family trees are quite possibly one expansive orchard.

Our 2018 calendar on old East Indian houses in Giriz reflects this pattern, with just a few Valkar homes to be seen among the Vadval houses in there.

Pictured here are the interiors for the oldest Valkar home in Giriz (not certain if it is also the oldest Valkar home in all of Vasai). The House of the Month for February, Rebello-Almeida House from the 1820s has stood the test of time rather well.

Just another month to go for our explorations of the old East Indian houses in Giriz, Vasai to end.
But here's Rebello-Almeida House, one of the few Valkar East Indian old homes that are still standing in Giriz. It's the second oldest house we found and it's the House of the Month for February.

Look up the hashtag #EIMCOHGPCalendar on Instagram to see more of this project.

East Indian Ar Audrey Baptista Dsouza's family albums were a delight to flip through.

Not only did they provide a glimpse into the lives of an EI family from Mumbai's Vile Parle suburb, but they also granted us the opportunity to learn more about Edwin and Rose Baptista - a remarkable EI couple who represented Bombay City in its first ever appearance in a tableau for the Republic Day parade in 1950.

Find their story here: eastindianmemoryco.com > Stories > EI Love Stories: Rose & Edwin

And if you want to talk about your own family's history, send us a quick message and we can get chatting!

What do you find in old houses?

Things once viewed as mundane and commonplace are now worth far more in a modern world filled with more plastic and composite materials than ever.
Kabaats/tallboys and kaders/chairs made of strong, sturdy wood and even tiling from an old house sometimes pop up in antique stores and at the kabaadiwaala/junk shop - at times priced dearly or in the case of the latter, at a pittance.
In Giriz, Akashwadi's Colaso House from the 1800s, old furniture and artefacts are thankfully kept close - to grow old with this incredibly old home.

Look up the hashtag #EIMCOHGPCalendar to view more old East Indian houses documented in this tiny part of Vasai, Maharashtra.

For January’s quiz question, we asked: “What is the significance of these pots?” These kalshi, tapela or kara (depending on which EI group or gaothan you belong to) are crowned with coconuts and mango leaves and used in the East Indian pre-wedding tradition known as Umracha Paani.

The karavlis (flower girls/bridesmaids) are tasked with ferrying the pots to and from the bride/groom's house after filling them up at the village well or at a relatives' home with water - all without setting them down even once!

Signifying fertility and prosperity, the water collected in these coconut and mango leaf-crowned pots is used to bathe the bride/groom on the wedding morning.

The next time you see a boisterous procession snaking down a road in the night time with pots balanced on the heads of young girls, it's most certainly a merry group of East Indians enjoying the Umracha Paani!

Thank you, @ritchellecoutinho @lostsoul10194 @aaronpereira2 @dandmello @onlykaryn @anthea.karen @nolitadlima @nita9556 @saloni_nelson_carvalho @s_dahisarkar @monica.kinny @pra___t___ma @amritaa1363 @chefshannonl for playing!

PS: Swipe through today’s Stories for a pic of a certain someone on her Pani night 😉

The Colaso carvers from Salbhat, Vasai worked extensively on this Vadval East Indian home in Giriz's Akashwadi village.
Around the year 1818, there were just a handful of houses in the village, but Colaso House is the only one that exists today.
It underwent some renovations over the years, but the owners retained the original carved potmala*. *a vast storage or attic space located in the upper level of old Vadval houses usually used to store produce (the Vadvals were essentially farmers). #eastindian #architecture #heritage #vasai #mumbai #thane #raigad #maharashtra #india #farmershouse #woodenhouse #villagelife #1800s #indianhome #oldhouse #EIMCJan19 #vadval #colaso #traditionalarchitecture #EIMCOHGPCalendar #colaso
